Mural Debuts on the 57th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Historic, “I Have a Dream” Speech
Smith & Associates Real Estate is excited to announce their partnership with Ya La'Ford, the Lovelady Family, and Healthy St. Pete to bring a new community mural, "Community Woven" to the Warehouse Arts District, located in the southside of St. Petersburg, Florida. With "Community Woven," Ya La'Ford will create a visual quilt composed of, “words, wisdom, and well-wishes,” collected from the local community, which reflects the powerful emotional sentiment in today’s movement to ensure equality and justice.
This powerful community installation will be located across from the artist's "King's Dream Unite" mural on the Historic Manhattan Casino wall. "Community Woven" will be a poignant tribute to these turbulent times designed to unite us in our humanity.
Just like her “King's Dream Unite” mural, this patchwork quilt will be illuminated to remind people that hope can be found in the darkest places. Says La'Ford, "I envision the two murals creating a vibrational corridor that emotes hope. Hope is always present when we recognize the humanity within each of us. I hope the two murals will empower children in St. Pete and across our country."
The mural's 25’ x 20’ design composed of 12” x 6” patchwork will first be sketched on a template and later installed on the wall under La’Ford’s guidance. The overall composition of the patch designs will contribute and build a foundation for Ya Laford's layered geometric labyrinth—highlighting the purpose and value of interconnectivity and community engagement during a period of profound contemplation and transformation. Children participating from organizations such as the Mt. Zion Academy and Pinellas Foster Care will be an integral part of the piece and will be provided enhanced engagements by the artist through zoom meetings with the children and creative home activities.
Installation of the mural begins this month. "Community Woven" debuts on August 28th, the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech.
For the St. Petersburg unveiling, business leaders, community members, activists, and artists will come together to celebrate the power art has to bridge humanity.
